Air duct cleaning: what it costs, when you need it, and how to hire
Air duct cleaning removes dust, debris and contamination from a home's heating and cooling ducts and the system they connect to. The EPA says it typically, but not always, costs $450 to $1,000 per heating and cooling system; Fixr's January 2026 survey puts most homes at $300 to $700, with a $500 average for 2,000 square feet. The EPA says to consider it when there is visible mold in hard ducts, vermin, or ducts clogged with dust and debris, and that duct cleaning has never been shown to prevent health problems.

What is air duct cleaning?
NADCA calls "air duct cleaning" a misnomer: the entire heating and cooling system should be cleaned, and it says failing to clean all the components can recontaminate the whole system. The EPA's description matches: duct cleaning generally covers the supply and return ducts and registers, grilles and diffusers, heat exchangers, heating and cooling coils, drip pans, the fan motor and housing, and the air handling unit housing. The EPA says to make sure the provider agrees to clean all components and is qualified to do so. NADCA says truck-mounted and portable vacuums can both be used to get the system cleaned to its standard.

Who cleans air ducts?
HomeGuide says professional duct cleaning companies or HVAC contractors typically do the work. The EPA says it neither sets duct cleaning standards nor certifies, endorses or approves duct cleaning companies, so be wary of any cleaner claiming EPA certification. NADCA says its members have technicians with advanced training and certification in HVAC system cleaning, and it publishes its own standard, ACR. Fixr adds that many states license HVAC contractors but may not license duct cleaning companies, and suggests hiring someone with at least a general contractor's or HVAC technician's license where you live.
How to hire an air duct cleaning service near you
- Talk to at least three providers and get written estimates (EPA).
- Ask each to show you the contamination that justifies the cleaning (EPA).
- Do not hire anyone making sweeping health claims, or recommending duct cleaning as routine maintenance (EPA).
- Do not allow chemical biocides or treatments unless you understand the pros and cons (EPA).
- Avoid unusually low prices; Fixr and HomeGuide both warn that deals that seem too good to be true usually are.

Does air duct cleaning include dryer vent?
Not unless it is on the work order. The dryer vent is a separate duct: the building code requires dryer exhaust systems to be independent of all other systems.
