How often should dryer vents be cleaned?
Clean your dryer vent at least once a year, the NFPA says, and sooner if clothes are taking longer than normal to dry. Clean the lint screen before or after every load. Massachusetts' Department of Fire Services goes further on the outside vent and says to clean it twice a year.

How often should dryer vents be cleaned?
Clothes dryer vents should be cleaned at least once a year. That baseline comes from the NFPA's clothes dryer safety tip sheet, which says to clean lint out of the vent pipe yourself or "have a dryer lint removal service do it for you." The same sheet names failure to clean as the leading cause of home clothes dryer fires. NFPA's data puts a number on it: failure to clean was a factor in 32 percent of home dryer fires in 2014 to 2018, and it was still the leading factor in 2020 to 2024 fire department records, at 31.2% of dryer fires with a known cause. The US Fire Administration does not give a fixed interval. It says the dryer's interior and venting system should be serviced and cleaned periodically by qualified service personnel, "especially if it is taking longer than normal for clothes to dry."
When once a year is not enough
Treat the annual cleaning as the minimum. Clean sooner when any of these apply:
- A long run or many bends. The USFA says that when a vent is too long or has many bends and turns, moisture condenses on the duct walls and attracts lint, which builds up and creates resistance.
- A roof vent. Fixr reports that roof vents are more exposed to the elements and clog more than wall vents.
- Slow drying. The NFPA and the USFA both use longer drying times as the trigger for cleaning early.
- A shared or commercial system. Massachusetts says commercial dryers should be cleaned out regularly because of their frequent use and shared venting system.
Timing matters too. In the USFA's 2008 to 2010 data, residential dryer fires were more common in fall and winter and peaked in January, at 11 percent of the year's fires; in fire department records for 2020 to 2024, January (9.8%), February (9.3%) and March (10.1%) were the three busiest months. How often should dryer vents be cleaned in a condo?
At least once a year for each unit, the same as a house, and check your building's rules first. If your vent runs through shared walls or up to the roof, the association may book cleaning for the whole building. How often to clean outside dryer vent
Twice a year, per the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services, to clear accumulated dust and lint. Between cleanings, look at the hood while the dryer runs: the NFPA says the outdoor flap should open when the dryer is operating, and should not be covered by snow.
