HomeGuide puts a typical sweep of a masonry chimney at $150 to $375, with a national average of $275, and the NFPA says to have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional. Book before the cold months: in fire department records for 2020 to 2024, 57.4% of chimney fires happened in December, January and February.

What does a chimney sweep do?

For a masonry chimney with a wood-burning fireplace, HomeGuide says the work includes cleaning out the firebox and smoke shelf and vacuuming up the debris. The sweep brushes the flue to remove soot and creosote and looks the system over for cracks and damage; HomeGuide says a basic inspection with cleaning takes 45 to 60 minutes. The Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) recommends having chimneys checked every year by a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep and swept or repaired as needed.

How often should you sweep your chimney?

Once a year. The NFPA's heating safety tip sheet says to have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional, and NFPA's heating safety page says chimneys and heating systems should be inspected and cleaned each year before they are fired up for the season. Portland Fire & Rescue gives the same advice: have the chimney inspected before every heating season and cleaned if necessary. When chimney fires happen

Chimney fires confined to the chimney or flue made up 3.4% of residential structure fires in fire department records for 2020 to 2024, and they are heavily seasonal: January alone accounts for 21.9% and the three winter months for 57.4%, against 0.6% each in July and August. NFPA's national estimates for 2020 to 2024 point the same way: nearly half of home heating equipment fires (46%) happened from December through February.

Where you live matters more. In Vermont, chimney fires were 19.5% of residential structure fire records, in Maine 17.3% and in New Hampshire 16.2%; in Texas they were 1.4% and in Florida 0.6%. The share fell from 3.8% in 2020 to 2.9% in 2024. State-by-state figures: chimney-fires-by-state.csv.

Do you need a chimney sweep for a gas fireplace?

Yes, once a year: the NFPA's annual cleaning and inspection advice covers heating equipment and chimneys, not only wood fireplaces. The job is cheaper. HomeGuide prices a gas fireplace cleaning at $80 to $150 and says gas tends to burn cleaner with less residue than wood.

Why it matters

CSIA describes creosote as the black or brown residue wood smoke leaves in the flue, sometimes crusty and flaky, sometimes tar-like or shiny and hardened, and says that if it builds up enough and the flue gets hot enough, the result can be a chimney fire. NFPA's 2020 to 2024 estimates put home heating equipment fires at 37,365 a year; the larger fires involving fireplaces or chimneys were 6% of those but caused 19% of the direct property damage. A slow-burning chimney fire can go unnoticed until a later inspection, CSIA says, while still reaching temperatures that damage the chimney.

How to pick a chimney sweep

1. Ask whether the sweep is CSIA certified. CSIA keeps a searchable list of certified sweeps by ZIP code.
2. Ask what the price includes: the firebox, smoke shelf and flue, and a Level 1 inspection.
3. Ask for photos of anything the sweep says needs repair, before you agree to the repair.
