How much does dryer vent cleaning cost?
Dryer vent cleaning costs $80 to $185 for a standard vent and $150 to $250 for a vent that exits through the roof, according to HomeGuide, which puts the national average at $130. Fixr, a second price survey, puts the average range at $100 to $200 and the national average at $150. A bird nest, wet lint or a long run pushes the bill to the top of those ranges.

The two surveys put the average dryer vent cleaning price $20 apart. Dryer duct cleaning cost is the same figure under another name: the duct is the vent.

Dryer vent cleaning cost by vent location
Where the vent exits decides most of the price. A vent that runs a few feet from a first-floor laundry room to an outside wall is a short job. A vent that climbs through the attic to the roof means a ladder, roof access and a longer run.

HomeGuide says roof vents take more time because of the difficult access, and that these vertical vents are more prone to mold from roof leaks. Fixr says roof vents are more exposed to the elements and clog more often than wall vents.
Dryer vent cleaning cost per foot and per hour
Most companies charge a flat fee by vent location, not by the foot. Fixr reports that some technicians charge $90 to $160 per hour, cover about 15 feet of duct in an hour, and so work out to $6 to $11 per foot of duct. Fixr also puts a typical cleaning at 30 to 60 minutes. Its low end is $80 for a duct of 15 feet or less; its high end is $350 to inspect, clear a blockage and clean a roof vent.
Cost by problem: clogs, wet lint and bird nests
A routine cleaning and a vent packed with a nest are different jobs. Fixr prices them separately:

Before paying for a bird guard, ask what kind it is. The International Residential Code says screens shall not be installed at the dryer duct termination (section M1502.3), because a screen catches lint. A guard should keep birds out without putting mesh across the airflow.

What pushes the price up
- Access. Roof and second-floor vents cost more in both surveys.
- Length and turns. Fixr names duct length and the number of 90-degree turns among the factors that set the price. Long runs also collect more lint.
- What is in the duct. Wet lint and nests take longer than dry lint.
- Extras sold on the visit. Inspection, bird guards, lint alarms and reroutes are priced separately.
DIY dryer vent cleaning kit vs a professional
A cleaning kit costs $15 to $50, according to HomeGuide, which says standard kits have brush lines up to 12 feet long and some are longer than 20 feet. Fixr puts kits at $20 to $70. A kit makes sense for a short, straight run you can reach from both ends. Pay for a professional when the vent exits on the roof, the run is longer than your brush, a nest is involved, or the duct is crushed or disconnected. What a fair quote should cover
A low advertised price is fine if the job is complete; our dryer vent cleaning service page lists what a complete cleaning covers. Ask for these in writing before the visit:
- Cleaning of the full run, from the back of the dryer to the outside hood, not just the part you can see.
- The transition duct behind the dryer cleaned or replaced if it is plastic or foil.
- The exterior hood cleared, with the flap opening freely when the dryer runs.
- The price for roof access, if your vent exits there.
- Any add-on priced before work starts, not after.
