The city's Fire Prevention Code page says that code applies mainly to commercial and industrial buildings, and that its provisions are also enforced in the common areas of apartment buildings, such as hallways, boiler rooms and laundry rooms.

The city's Rental Property Manual, which carries no date and says the city has adopted the BOCA Basic Fire Prevention Code for condominium rental units, says the owner of each rental unit must give the tenant a written certificate, required annually, that all required smoke detectors are present, inspected and in good working order.
