McKinney's Fire Code, adopted by Ordinance No. 2025-08-066 with the city's amendments to the 2024 International Fire Code, defines a carbon monoxide source to include solid-, liquid- or gas-fired appliances, equipment, devices or systems such as fireplaces, furnaces, heaters, boilers, cooking equipment and vehicles with internal combustion engines. The city's Fire Code page says the City Council adopted the 2024 International Fire Code on August 19, 2025, with an effective date of October 1, 2025. The McKinney Fire Department's smoke alarm page lists fireplaces among possible sources of carbon monoxide in the home and names annual appliance check-ups by trained technicians among the best defenses against CO poisoning.
For outdoor burning, the Fire Marshal's Office Burn Restrictions page says open burning is not allowed within the City of McKinney without a permit, and it quotes Ordinance 2018-01-003, which defines open burning as "the burning of materials wherein products of combustion are emitted directly into the ambient air without passing through a stack or chimney from an enclosed chamber."

For outdoor fireplaces, McKinney's Fire Code (Ordinance No. 2025-08-066) says portable outdoor fireplaces shall be used in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and not operated within 15 feet of a structure or combustible material, with exceptions for those used at one- and two-family dwellings and where buildings, balconies and decks are protected by an approved automatic sprinkler system. For outdoor burning, the same code says a permit for silvicultural, range or wildlife management burning, disease or pest control, or a bonfire is presented only by and issued only to the owner of the land upon which the fire is to be kindled. Indoors, McKinney's Home Repairs Permit Information page says to start a residential mechanical permit by entering "Residential Stand-Alone Mechanical" in the CSS Portal's Application Assistant search bar, and lists minor repairs, including the routine replacement of filters, as mechanical work that does not require a permit.
