The city's page says it might take up to 90 days from the request to the installation, and that in an apartment building or a rented house the landlord must provide smoke alarms on every level of the home.
The Department of Licenses and Inspections (L&I) says you need a Mechanical Permit to install devices regulated by the Philadelphia Mechanical and Fuel Gas Codes, including heating, venting and air conditioning, and that ordinary repairs or maintenance to mechanical systems do not need one. As read in September 2026, L&I's fee schedule charged $76 per unit for direct vent heating apparatuses or warm air heating apparatus installation connected to a flue or chimney, except $69 for each apparatus in one- or two-family dwellings; that is one line of the schedule, which lists other permit fees as well.
