The City of Suffolk fee schedule for fiscal year 2026-2027 lists chimneys, free standing fireplaces and wood stoves, and stationary fireplaces as separate permit fee lines under Miscellaneous Fees, each at $56.00, the same amount it shows for fiscal year 2025-2026. The schedule also gives $56.00 as the minimum building and trade permit fee, and it does not say which chimney or fireplace jobs need a permit. Suffolk Fire & Rescue's fire and life safety page advises residents to have a qualified inspector check the furnace and chimney and to allow at least 3 feet of space around space heaters. The Fire Marshal's smoke detector request form asks how many levels the home has, how many smoke detectors it has and whether there is at least one on every level; the form does not say who qualifies.
For outdoor burning only, Suffolk Fire & Rescue's open burning page defines open burning as the burning of materials for purposes other than recreation and says a permit must be obtained from the Fire Marshal's Office and kept on hand at the burn site.
