Local rules and resources in Tulsa

For outdoor fires, the Tulsa Fire Department's open burning page says the City of Tulsa has adopted the 2015 International Fire Code, except where amended or specifically excluded, into Title 14 of its Revised Ordinances. That code defines open burning as burning in which the products of combustion are emitted directly into the ambient air without passing through a stack or chimney from an enclosed chamber, and it says open burning does not include recreational fires or the use of portable outdoor fireplaces. Under Tulsa's amendment 105.6.32, kindling or maintaining an open fire on any public street, alley, road or other public or private ground within city limits without an operational permit from the fire code official is a misdemeanor, with an exception for recreational fires. The page says outdoor recreational fires may not be held within 25 feet of a structure or combustible material, and portable outdoor fireplaces may not be operated within 15 feet of one, except at one- and two-family dwellings.

The Tulsa Fire Department's Home Safety Checklist tells residents to keep a three-foot clearance from heat generating appliances like space heaters, wood stoves and fireplaces. The checklist also calls for working carbon monoxide alarms in the home if gas appliances are used, and it lists Tulsa Fire Smoke Alarm Assistance at (918) 596-9422. The department's adult and senior programs page says that to receive a free smoke detector you must own your home, live within Tulsa city limits and be financially unable to afford one, and that providing a working smoke detector for tenants is the sole responsibility of the property owner or landlord under Section 907.2.10.5 of the city's Fire Prevention Code.
