Samsung dryer lint filter and vent: what Samsung's own pages and manuals say
Samsung says to clean the lint filter before or after every load, to prevent fire risk, and to clean the exhaust vent once or twice a year, with a professional vent cleaning service recommended for the vent. On models that have it, Samsung's Vent Blockage test shows C80 when the vent is about 80% clogged and C90 for about 90%. The user manual for its DVE(G)45T6000 dryers allows up to 80 feet of 4-inch rigid duct with no elbows and the recommended 4-inch weather hood (74 feet with the 2.5-inch hood, for short runs only), more than the 35 feet in the 2021 International Residential Code. This page quotes Samsung's own pages; it is not from Samsung, and Samsung is not affiliated with this site.

Samsung dryer lint filter: where it is and how Samsung says to clean it
The DVE(G)45T6000 manual's steps:
- Pull out the filter. Turn off the dryer, open the door and pull out the lint filter from inside the drum (Samsung user manual).
- Open and clean it. Open the lint filter by separating it at the top, remove the lint, and clean the filter (Samsung user manual).
- Put it back. Close the lint filter, reinsert it, and close the door (Samsung user manual).
Samsung's cleaning page adds that a pipe cleaner can clear out the lint filter compartment, and that if you clean it only before or after a cycle, Samsung recommends before; both is better. Do not operate the dryer without the lint filter in place, or with a damaged or broken one, which may reduce performance, cause a fire, or both.
A filter icon shows after every load whether or not the filter is clean (Samsung's icon page calls it Filter Reminder; the manual, Filter Check). Samsung describes the moisture sensors as two curved metal bars inside the front of the drum, typically in the lint filter housing or beside it; clean them with a soft cloth and a drop of dish soap.

Samsung dryer vent sensor and the Vent Check light
Samsung's spec sheet for the DVG45M5500Z gas dryer lists Multi-Steam Technology and a Vent Sensor as signature features, and says the Vent Sensor "Detects duct blockages and reminds you to clean your vent."
Samsung's dryer icon page lists a Vent Check icon and says it means the exhaust vent needs cleaning: during or after a cycle it lights up if the exhaust vent is about 60% clogged, and if the vent is 80% clogged the icon blinks for three hours after a cycle is completed. Icons vary by model.
Samsung's not drying page says the dryer reduces heat if it detects that heat and moisture are not leaving, to prevent overheating and fires in the vent, and that a dryer that heats but leaves clothes damp probably has a blocked vent.
Samsung dryer vent blockage test: C80, C90 and the other codes
Samsung says to run the Vent Blockage test after the dryer is first installed and every once in a while after that. Not all Samsung dryers have it; check your user manual. Samsung's support page steps:
- Start cool and empty. A dryer that was just used may not enter test mode until it cools; right after installation, Samsung suggests running AIR FLUFF for several minutes to lower the internal temperature. Empty the drum and close the door (Samsung support page).
- Enter test mode. Press POWER, and within 5 seconds press and hold Adjust Time Up and Dry Level until InS or In appears. If that pair does not work, try Cycle 1 and Wrinkle Prevent, or Air Fluff and Wrinkle Prevent (Samsung support page).
- Run it. Press and hold START/PAUSE. The test lasts about 2 minutes; do not open the door (Samsung support page).
- Read the result. It stays on the display for about 5 minutes (Samsung support page).
| Code | What Samsung says it means |
|---|---|
| 0 or End | The duct system is normal and unblocked |
| CLg or Cg | The vent is clogged; clean the lint filter and check the vent against the ducting requirements |
| C80 or C8 | About 80% of the vent is clogged; this may decrease drying performance |
| C90 or C9 | Over 90% of the vent is clogged; this may lead to poor drying performance or cause malfunction |
| Ct | Dryer too cold (below 32°F) or too hot (over 104°F) to test; leave it at room temperature for an hour and test again |
| dc | The door is open |
| C1 or CL1 | Laundry is detected in the drum |
For the CLg code, the manual adds: "You must take measures (such as cleaning) through expert personnel." The support page says that even if the dryer passes, you should still clean the vent once or twice a year, and the manual warns that a normal "0" result does not rule out a slight blockage.
For most models without the test, Samsung's check is to disconnect the exhaust vent and run a Time Dry cycle for at least 30 seconds with Eco Dry off. If the dryer is hotter with the vent disconnected, Samsung says the vent is too clogged or does not meet the manual's requirements.
Samsung dryer vent cleaning: Samsung's steps
Samsung's cleaning page recommends a professional vent cleaning service, and gives these steps for owners who do it themselves with a vent cleaning kit, drill, screwdriver, vacuum, pliers and tape:
- Shut it down. If you have a gas dryer, turn off the gas and unplug the dryer from its power source (Samsung cleaning page).
- Outside. If possible, take apart the external vent and remove any lint from the cover (Samsung cleaning page).
- Behind the dryer. Disconnect the flexible or semi-rigid duct from the floor or wall attachment, usually by removing the clamp (Samsung cleaning page).
- Brush the run. Attach the kit to the drill, insert the brush, and rotate it slowly clockwise, adding extension rods until the brush reaches all the way through the vent. You may want to tape the rod connections so they do not get lost or stuck inside the vent (Samsung cleaning page).
- Inspect and finish. Replace a damaged duct; otherwise clean it gently with the brush. Vacuum lint and debris, reconnect the duct, put the dryer back, plug it in, reassemble the exterior vent, and turn the gas back on (Samsung cleaning page).
The DVE(G)45T6000 manual says the external exhaust hood must be cleaned frequently to ensure proper air flow. NFPA's tip sheet says once a year, or more often if clothes take longer than normal to dry, clean lint out of the vent pipe or have a dryer lint removal service do it. NFPA also says the leading cause of home clothes dryer fires is failure to clean them. The general method is in how to clean a dryer vent, other brands' slow drying checks are in why a dryer is not drying, and LG's version of this page is the LG dryer vent guide.
Samsung dryer vent length, duct type and exhaust hood
The DVE(G)45T6000 manual requires a 4-inch exhaust duct, says to use 4-inch rigid metal ducts, tape all joints including the dryer connection, never use lint-trapping screws, and keep the ducts as straight as possible. It warns against plastic, thin-foil or non-metal flexible ducts of any kind, and against installing a booster fan in the exhaust duct.
| 90° elbows | Recommended 4" hood | 2.5" hood, short runs only |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | 80 ft. (24.4 m) | 74 ft. (22.6 m) |
| 1 | 68 ft. (20.7 m) | 62 ft. (18.9 m) |
| 2 | 57 ft. (17.4 m) | 51 ft. (15.5 m) |
| 3 | 47 ft. (14.3 m) | 41 ft. (12.5 m) |
Samsung's own pages differ on elbows. Its not drying page says every 90 degree turn reduces the maximum length by 6 feet; the DVE(G)45T6000 chart drops 10 to 12 feet per elbow (our arithmetic from the chart). The same page says the vent must be fitted and sealed without gaps, not plastic or foil, not longer than the manual's maximum, and free from kinks or flattening.
The manual also gives a figure you can measure: static pressure in the exhaust duct at the dryer, read with a manometer while the dryer runs empty with a clean lint filter, must not exceed 0.83 inches of water column. At the outside end, Samsung's setup page and the manual both say to make sure the exhaust hood damper opens and closes freely.
Samsung's chart and the 35-foot code rule
Section M1502.4.6 of the 2021 International Residential Code says the maximum duct length is set by one of three methods. Section M1502.4.6.1 sets 35 feet from the transition duct connection to the outlet, reduced for fittings; a 4-inch radius mitered 90-degree elbow counts as 5 feet. Section M1502.4.6.2 lets the dryer manufacturer's installation instructions set the size and maximum length instead, and says the code official shall be given a copy of those instructions at the concealment inspection.
| 90° elbows | Samsung chart, 4" hood | IRC 35 feet, with 4-inch radius mitered elbows (our arithmetic) |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | 80 ft. | 35 feet |
| 1 | 68 ft. | 30 feet of straight duct |
| 3 | 47 ft. | 20 feet of straight duct |
Where the 2021 IRC is adopted, a duct whose equivalent length exceeds 35 feet must carry a permanent label or tag stating that length, within 6 feet of the exhaust duct connection (M1502.4.7). The code limits the transition duct to 8 feet, listed to UL 2158A and not concealed (M1502.4.3); Samsung caps flexible metal duct at 7' 10 1/2" (2.4 m). Both prohibit booster fans (M1502.4.5). The code requires a backdraft damper at the termination and says "Screens shall not be installed at the duct termination" (M1502.3). The elbow math for other fittings is on how long a dryer vent can be.
Samsung dryer side vent kit
The DVE(G)45T6000 manual says the dryer is factory-ready for rear exhaust, and to exhaust out the bottom, right or left, use the accessory exhaust kit, with instructions included in the kit. It points to samsung.com for available side vent kits; Samsung's US site lists a Side Vent Kit, model DV-2A/XAA.
Samsung ventless and heat pump dryers
Samsung's product page for the DV25B6900HW, a 4.0 cu. ft. heat pump dryer, lists its venting system as Ventless. Samsung's page on ventless dryers that do not dry says that if the dryer shows "Clean heat exchanger optional filter & tap OK," press the top of the heat exchanger's outer cover to open it, undo the inner cover's lock, pull the inner cover to remove it, and clean the dust off the heat exchanger with the brush provided with the dryer; a soft, damp cloth can take the rest.
