Whirlpool dryer vent cleaning: what Whirlpool's own pages and manuals say
Whirlpool says the Check Vent light on its dryers means the dryer airflow is restricted, and that venting going to the outside of the home must be cleaned every one to two years, or as needed when dry performance has decreased. Whirlpool's 2024 electric dryer owner's manual (W11685596C) allows up to 64 feet of 4-inch rigid metal vent with no elbows, more than the 35 feet in the 2021 International Residential Code, which lets the dryer maker's instructions set the length instead. NFPA says to clean lint out of the vent pipe once a year, or more often if clothes take longer than normal to dry. This page quotes Whirlpool's own pages; it is not from Whirlpool.

Whirlpool dryer vent cleaning: how often Whirlpool and NFPA say to do it
Whirlpool's documents give three intervals. Its Check Vent help page says venting going to the outside of the home must be cleaned every one to two years. The 2024 owner's manual says to remove lint from the entire length of the vent system at least every 2 years. Whirlpool's Dryer Venting Specifications recommend an annual inspection for single-family usage.
The same specifications also note that even though the dryer is equipped with a lint screen, fine particles of lint will pass through the screen and be exhausted out of the dryer. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) tip sheet says to clean lint out of the vent pipe, or have a dryer lint removal service do it, once a year or more often if clothes take longer than normal to dry. NFPA says the leading cause of home clothes dryer fires is failure to clean them.
Whirlpool dryer check vent light: what it means and what to do
Whirlpool's help page says the Check Vent light is on the console and indicates that the dryer airflow is restricted. The 2024 manual says that if the Airflow screen reads "Check Vent," the dryer vent may be crushed or blocked. The help page's steps include:
- Behind the dryer. Make sure the venting is not crushed. If it is, replace it with rigid or flexible metal venting, and allow a minimum of 4" between the dryer and the wall when reinstalling the unit (Whirlpool Check Vent page).
- Outside. Check that the vent hood on the house's exterior is not clogged or blocked by landscaping (Whirlpool Check Vent page).
- Inside the house. Clean the internal house venting. Whirlpool says this may require a vent cleaning service person, depending on the venting installation (Whirlpool Check Vent page).
- Material and route. Replace plastic or foil vent with 4" rigid or flexible metal vent, keep it as short as possible, and use as few 90° elbows as possible; each bend and curve reduces airflow (Whirlpool Check Vent page).
The same page says that cleaning is not covered by warranty and will not be performed by an appliance service technician. The 2024 manual says service calls caused by improper venting are not covered by the warranty and will be paid by the customer, regardless of who installed the dryer; to clean or repair venting, contact a venting specialist. Whirlpool sells a dryer vent testing kit, part #W11224254.
Whirlpool dryer AF code
Whirlpool's venting specifications say certain electronic models have airflow detection, and if airflow is extremely low, an "AF" code is displayed. For a single dryer, it means you may have a blocked or partially blocked vent, or a vent system that is too long. Whirlpool's fixes: check that the run from the dryer to the wall is not crushed and is free of lint and debris, that the exterior exhaust hood is free of lint and debris, and that the length and number of elbows are within the recommendation for your type of vent. Then select a Timed Dry heated cycle and restart. If the message persists, have your entire home venting run cleaned. Whirlpool's 2009 installation instructions (W10267633A) put "Clean lint screen" first and say the dryer keeps running with the code present.
Whirlpool's exhaust inspection and cleaning steps
Whirlpool's Dryer Venting Specifications say every exhaust system must be inspected periodically and cleaned to ensure it is intact and free from lint accumulation. Its steps:
- Disconnect both ends. Disconnect the exhaust duct from the dryer and from the exhaust hood outside the building (Whirlpool venting specifications).
- Clean the duct and hood. Remove lint from inside the duct and from the hood, where it may stop the flappers or louvers opening or closing completely; check that they move freely (Whirlpool venting specifications).
- Reassemble. Put the duct and hood back together, checking that the joints are secure (Whirlpool venting specifications).
- Test. Run the dryer, verify that the exhaust air is not obstructed and that there are no leaks, and seal any leaks found (Whirlpool venting specifications).
Whirlpool's blog on a dryer not drying says cleaning a dryer vent may take less than two hours, and suggests a service professional if the duct is hard to find or access. Tools and methods for the full run are on how to clean a dryer vent. Lint inside the dryer cabinet is a separate job: the 2024 manual says it should be removed every 2 years, or more often depending on usage, by a qualified appliance service or ventilation system cleaner.
Whirlpool dryer lint trap: where it is and how to clean it
The 2024 manual says the lint screen may be located either in the door opening or the top of the dryer, depending on model. Its safety instructions say to clean the lint screen before or after each load. Whirlpool's lint screen help page gives the routine: pull the screen straight up, roll the lint off with your fingers, and push the screen firmly back into place. Do not rinse or wash it to remove lint, because wet lint is hard to remove.
Detergent and fabric softener residue can build up on the screen, which Whirlpool says can cause longer drying times or make the dryer stop before the load is completely dry; the screen is probably clogged if lint falls off while it is in the dryer. Whirlpool says to scrub it every six months, or more often if it clogs: roll the lint off, wet both sides with hot water, scrub with a nylon brush wet with hot water and liquid detergent, rinse with hot water, dry it thoroughly with a clean towel and reinstall it. As needed, vacuum lint from the space where the screen sits. The manual says not to run the dryer with the lint screen loose, damaged, blocked or missing, which can cause overheating and damage to the dryer and fabrics.
Whirlpool dryer secondary lint trap
Whirlpool's HybridCare dryers have a second one. Whirlpool's help page says their lint screen is in the door opening and is cleaned every load, and a HybridCare filter at the bottom front of the dryer is cleaned when its light comes on every five cycles: open the filter flap, pull out the filter, take out its lint screen and foam pad, roll the lint off with your fingers, and put them back. Some water in that filter is normal, Whirlpool says; the dryer will not operate without the filter, and "LF" will display if it is not properly seated.
Whirlpool dryer venting requirements
The 2024 manual says only a 4" (102 mm) heavy metal exhaust vent and clamps may be used, never plastic or metal foil. Rigid metal vent is recommended for best drying performance and to avoid crushing and kinking. Flexible metal vent is acceptable only if accessible to clean, must be fully extended and supported, must not be installed in enclosed walls, ceilings or floors, and should not exceed 7¾ ft (2.4 m) in total. Seal joints with clamps, not duct tape or screws that extend into the duct and catch lint. Whirlpool's venting specifications say it does not approve anything other than rigid metal or flexible metal duct in a 4" diameter, so no PVC and no larger duct.
| 90° elbows | 2024 manual, box, louvered or angled hood | 2009 instructions, box or louvered hood | 2009 instructions, angled hood |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 64 ft (20 m) | 64 ft (20 m) | 58 ft (17.7 m) |
| 1 | 54 ft (16.5 m) | 54 ft (16.5 m) | 48 ft (14.6 m) |
| 2 | 44 ft (13.4 m) | 44 ft (13.4 m) | 38 ft (11.6 m) |
| 3 | 35 ft (10.7 m) | 35 ft (10.7 m) | 29 ft (8.8 m) |
| 4 | 27 ft (8.2 m) | 27 ft (8.2 m) | 21 ft (6.4 m) |
Both documents say side and bottom exhaust installations have a 90° turn inside the dryer, so add one 90° turn to the chart. For the 29" wide long vent WED/WGD4985 and WED/WGD4995 models only, the 2024 manual's chart runs from 160 ft (48.8 m) with no elbows to 110 ft (33.5 m) with five. Where a model's instructions do not cover the number of elbows needed, Whirlpool's venting specifications say this calculation may be used: 10 ft (3.05 m) off the allowable length for each 90° elbow and 6 ft (1.83 m) for each 45° elbow.
For the hood, both manuals recommend louvered or box styles and list angled as acceptable. The hood should cap the vent to keep rodents and insects out, must be at least 12" (305 mm) from the ground or anything that may obstruct the exhaust, and must not have a magnetic latch. More on hood types and dampers is on the dryer vent cover page.
Where the vent is on a Whirlpool dryer, and periscope kits
Both manuals say typical installations vent the dryer from the rear. The 2024 manual says some models can be converted to exhaust out the right side, left side or bottom, available only on select 27" wide models, and says to cover unused exhaust holes with a manufacturer's exhaust cover kit (part number W10186596 in the 2009 instructions).
For tight spaces, both manuals show an over-the-top installation and a periscope installation. The 2009 instructions give the part numbers: over-the-top kit 4396028, and periscope kits for a mismatch between the dryer vent and the wall vent of 0" to 18" (4396037), 18" to 29" (4396011) and 29" to 50" (4396014).
Whirlpool's vent chart and the 35-foot code rule
Section M1502.4.6 of the 2021 International Residential Code gives three methods for the maximum length. M1502.4.6.1 sets 35 feet from the transition duct connection to the outlet, reduced for each fitting; a 4-inch radius mitered 90-degree elbow counts as 5 feet. M1502.4.6.2 lets the dryer manufacturer's installation instructions set the size and maximum length instead, with a copy given to the code official at the concealment inspection.
| 90° elbows | Whirlpool 2024 chart | IRC 35 feet, 4-inch radius mitered elbows (our arithmetic) |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | 64 ft | 35 feet |
| 2 | 44 ft | 25 feet of straight duct |
| 4 | 27 ft | 15 feet of straight duct |
They also count differently. The IRC leaves the transition duct out of the 35 feet and caps it at 8 feet (M1502.4.3); Whirlpool's 2024 manual says the length of flexible metal vent must be included in the vent system design shown in its chart, and caps it at 7¾ ft. For extra elbows, the IRC charges 5 feet for a 4-inch radius mitered 90-degree elbow, while Whirlpool's extra-elbow calculation takes 10 ft off for each 90° elbow.
Where the 2021 IRC is adopted, a duct whose equivalent length exceeds 35 feet must carry a permanent label or tag stating that length, within 6 feet of the exhaust duct connection (M1502.4.7). The code also requires a backdraft damper at the termination and says "Screens shall not be installed at the duct termination" (M1502.3). The elbow math for other fittings is on how long a dryer vent can be; LG's chart is on the LG dryer vent page.
If your Whirlpool dryer still shows Check Vent or AF after the checks above, Whirlpool's own pages point to a vent cleaning service person or venting specialist for the venting inside the house. A dryer vent cleaning company can check that run; use the form below and we will send your request to a company that serves your ZIP code. Power and heat problems are on why a dryer is not drying.
