Arlington dryer vent code rules
On November 1, 2022, the Arlington City Council adopted the 2021 editions of the International Building Codes, which the city's Building Codes page says include the International Residential Code, in the Construction Chapter of the Code of Ordinances, and the International Mechanical Code, in the Mechanical Chapter. The Construction Chapter adopts the 2021 International Residential Code together with the city's deletions, amendments and addenda as part of the Building Code of the City of Arlington, and the Building Codes page says that starting January 1, 2023, permit applications are required to be in compliance with the adopted codes.
The city's current amendments to the residential code, in Section 1.04 of the Construction Chapter, do not change the clothes dryer exhaust section; the mechanical sections they amend include appliances in attics, condensate disposal and makeup air. One amended gas piping section says a shutoff valve serving a movable appliance, such as a clothes dryer, is considered to be provided with access where it is installed behind the appliance. The Mechanical Chapter's current amendments to the 2021 International Mechanical Code do not change its clothes dryer duct sections either.
Under the 2021 International Residential Code, a dryer exhaust duct can run at most 35 feet, minus an allowance for each elbow (M1502.4.6.1), or the length the dryer maker's installation instructions allow (M1502.4.6.2); the hose behind the dryer must be one listed piece of 8 feet or less (M1502.4.3); and the duct must end outside with a backdraft damper and no screen (M1502.3), and domestic booster fans are not allowed (M1502.4.5).
