Chantilly is in Fairfax County, whose Land Development Services codes page says the county is required to enforce the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (USBC). The same page notes that the administrative provisions of the 2021 USBC became effective on January 18, 2024, that from then until January 17, 2025 permit applicants could choose the technical provisions of either the 2018 or 2021 USBC, and that beginning January 18, 2025, all applications and plans must meet the 2021 USBC requirements.
The 2021 Virginia code changes the dryer duct installation section (M1502.4.2) to require exhaust duct supports at four-foot intervals. We did not read Fairfax County Code Chapter 61, Building Provision, for local dryer rules.
Under the 2021 Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code, a dryer exhaust duct can run at most 35 feet, minus an allowance for each elbow (M1502.4.6.1), or the length the dryer maker's installation instructions allow (M1502.4.6.2); the hose behind the dryer must be one listed piece of 8 feet or less (M1502.4.3); and the duct must end outside with a backdraft damper and no screen (M1502.3), and domestic booster fans are not allowed (M1502.4.5). Permits for dryer vent work in Chantilly
Fairfax County Land Development Services' Does My Project Require a Permit? page, which it says is not an exhaustive list, names "New, repair or relocated mechanical or gas fixtures" among residential projects that need a permit and says that item "Includes duct work, range hood, fireplace, propane tanks, HVAC, etc." The same list also names "Direct replacement of household appliances" ("Includes stoves, ovens, water heaters, HVAC, etc.") as needing a permit, while the page lists "Direct replacement of electrical, plumbing and mechanical work (no change in location and must be a like-for-like replacement)" among residential work that does not need a permit.
