Cottonwood Heights' Codes and Standards page lists the 2021 International Residential Code among the codes, with state amendments, currently enforced in the city, and city code Section 15.08.010 adopts the most current editions of the International Building Code and International Residential Code, meaning the editions adopted from time to time by their promulgating body and the State of Utah. Utah Code Section 15A-2-103 adopts the 2021 edition of the International Residential Code statewide; the state text lists the 2021 edition both in the version now in force and in the version effective January 1, 2027, and gives no date the 2021 edition took effect.

Utah's statewide amendments to chapters 6 through 15 of the residential code (Utah Code Section 15A-3-203) do not change the clothes dryer exhaust section (M1502), and the city's building codes chapter (15.08) has no dryer exhaust amendment.

Under the 2021 International Residential Code, a dryer exhaust duct can run at most 35 feet, minus an allowance for each elbow (M1502.4.6.1), or the length the dryer maker's installation instructions allow (M1502.4.6.2); the hose behind the dryer must be one listed piece of 8 feet or less (M1502.4.3); and the duct must end outside with a backdraft damper and no screen (M1502.3), and domestic booster fans are not allowed (M1502.4.5). Permits for dryer vent work in Cottonwood Heights

Cottonwood Heights' building permit page says, "A building permit is required for all construction within the Cottonwood Heights, except for" one-story detached accessory buildings less than 200 square feet that meet setback and height requirements, residential floor coverings, residential interior wall coverings and private fencing that meets city zoning requirements; the page does not mention dryer vents. City code Section 15.08.030 says plumbing, electrical and mechanical fees shall not be assessed when such permits are issued in conjunction with a building permit. When we read the building permit page in September 2026, it said that effective March 2, 2026, City Hall would be open Monday through Thursday only, inspection requests would not be available on Fridays, and inspection requests for Monday must be submitted by 3:00 PM on the preceding Thursday. For next-day inspections, the page says to apply before 3 p.m. the day before, and the city does not offer same-day or weekend inspections. The city's Codes and Standards page adds an inspection note that tinted primer is required on all HVAC PVC joints.

Under the city's Fit Premises chapter (Section 15.32.050), a property owner must provide smoke detectors and fire extinguishers as required by code and must not rent the premises unless they are safe, sanitary and fit for human occupancy.
