Freehold dryer vent code rules

The New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA) lists the International Residential Code/2024, NJ edition, as the One- and Two-Family Dwelling Subcode (N.J.A.C. 5:23-3.21) and the International Mechanical Code/2024 as the Mechanical Subcode (N.J.A.C. 5:23-3.20), both with an adoption date of August 17, 2026. DCA says that for a period of six months following the operative date of a subcode revision, applicants may submit a complete permit application, including all prior approvals, to be reviewed under the code in force immediately before the revision.

In the Department of Community Affairs' copy of the rules, we found no New Jersey amendment to the Chapter 15 dryer exhaust rules of the 2024 IRC. DCA says its copies of the rules are provided as a courtesy only, and that the official rules are available through LexisNexis.

Under the 2024 International Residential Code, a dryer exhaust duct can run at most 35 feet, minus an allowance for each elbow (M1502.4.6.1), or the length the dryer maker's installation instructions allow (M1502.4.6.2); the hose behind the dryer must be one listed piece of 8 feet or less (M1502.4.3); and the duct must end outside with a backdraft damper and no screen (M1502.3), and domestic booster fans are not allowed (M1502.4.5). Permits for dryer vent work in Freehold

New Jersey's rule on ordinary maintenance, N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.7 in the Department of Community Affairs' copy of the rules, says ordinary maintenance to structures may be made without filing a permit application with or giving notice to the construction official. Its list of ordinary heating, ventilation and air conditioning maintenance, at (c)5, includes "Repair and replacement of duct work" and the replacement of domestic clothes dryers serving, and located within, dwelling units, provided that no change in fuel type, pipe size, or location or electrical characteristics is required. The same rule says the list is not an all-inclusive listing of ordinary maintenance, and that ordinary maintenance does not include any work affecting structural or fire safety. In Freehold Borough, applications may be obtained at the Construction Department in the Municipal Building, 30 Mechanic Street, and its inspection line is (732) 462-4903; its FAQ says replacing electrical wiring, plumbing, and constructing or removing walls do require a permit.

Freehold Borough's Bureau of Fire Prevention enforces the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code. When we read its page in September 2026, it said the office had a limited number of free smoke alarms for low income residents in the Borough, and asked residents to call Fire Official Ken Volkmann at 732 462-3626 to schedule an appointment.

The Borough's Construction Department says its inspectors review structural construction, plumbing, heating and air conditioning, and electrical work for compliance with the State Uniform Construction Code. As read in September 2026, the Borough's resident FAQ set a $35.00 pickup fee for old appliances such as a washer or dryer that do not contain FREON, arranged through the Administrator's office at 732 462-4200.
