Roswell dryer vent code rules

The Roswell City Code's building code article adopts by reference, for enforcement in the city, the latest editions of the Georgia State Minimum Standard Codes as adopted and amended, including the International Residential Code and the International Mechanical Code. The Georgia Department of Community Affairs lists the International Residential Code, 2024 Edition, and the International Mechanical Code, 2024 Edition, each with Georgia Amendments 2026, among its current mandatory codes, and a DCA memo dated December 1, 2025 gives them an effective date of January 1, 2026. In an announcement dated December 9, 2025, DCA said its Board voted to adopt codes with an effective date of January 1, 2027, including the 2024 International Residential Code and the 2024 International Mechanical Code with Georgia Amendments. We did not read the residential or mechanical amendment packets for 2027, so this page cannot say how they treat dryer exhaust.

The state's 2026 amendments to the residential code, revised January 1, 2026, do not mention clothes dryers or the dryer exhaust section (M1502), and its 2026 amendments to the mechanical code do not mention clothes dryers. Roswell's mechanical systems plan review checklist, effective January 1, 2026 and revised July 1, 2026, cites the International Mechanical Code, 2024 Edition with Georgia Amendments. The City Code sections on building codes and permits that we read do not mention dryers.

Under the 2024 International Residential Code, a dryer exhaust duct can run at most 35 feet, minus an allowance for each elbow (M1502.4.6.1), or the length the dryer maker's installation instructions allow (M1502.4.6.2); the hose behind the dryer must be one listed piece of 8 feet or less (M1502.4.3); and the duct must end outside with a backdraft damper and no screen (M1502.3), and domestic booster fans are not allowed (M1502.4.5). Permits for dryer vent work in Roswell

Roswell's Building Division takes permit applications only electronically, through the Roswell Permitting & Licensing HUB, and not by email or phone; for questions about permitting or applications, the city lists Resident and Business Services at (770) 641-3727, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The city's building applications work classes glossary, revised February 19, 2026, says the residential HVAC changeout application is strictly for like-for-like heating and cooling system replacements, and that systems requiring new ducts or additional ventilation/exhaust systems apply using the Mechanical - Residential application.
