Wilmington dryer vent code rules

Wilmington follows the statewide 2018 North Carolina Residential Code, built on the 2015 International Codes. When we read it in September 2026, the North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal listed the 2018 codes as effective from January 1, 2019 and currently effective. In a letter dated March 31, 2025, the State Fire Marshal wrote that under S.L. 2025-2 the 2024 North Carolina code will take effect 12 months after the State Fire Marshal certifies that its publication and distribution are complete and that the Residential Code Council is fully constituted, and that until then the 2018 North Carolina State Building Code remains in full force unless a building owner or agent asks for the 2024 code to be applied to the project.

North Carolina's approved amendments to the 2018 residential code, which carry a delayed effective date of January 1, 2021, change the dryer duct support interval in M1502.4.2 from 12 feet to 4 feet: exhaust ducts must be supported at intervals of no more than 4 feet and secured in place. They also add M1502.1.1, which says that where a closet is designed for a clothes dryer, the closet enclosure needs an opening of at least 100 square inches, or makeup air must be provided by other approved means.

Under the 2018 North Carolina Residential Code, a dryer exhaust duct can run at most 35 feet, minus an allowance for each elbow (M1502.4.5.1), or the length the dryer maker's installation instructions allow (M1502.4.5.2); the hose behind the dryer must be one listed piece of 8 feet or less (M1502.4.3); and the duct must end outside with a backdraft damper and no screen (M1502.3).
