Framingham dryer vent code rules

Mass.gov's handbook page on the tenth edition of the Massachusetts State Building Code (780 CMR) says the tenth edition became first effective on October 11, 2024 with a concurrency period, and that the concurrency period ends June 30, 2025, at which time the tenth edition will be the only building code in effect. The same page says the code's chapter 51, the Massachusetts Residential Code, adopts the 2021 International Residential Code with Massachusetts specific amendments.

The state's amendments document for the residential code's Chapter R15, Exhaust Systems, where the dryer exhaust rules (M1502) sit, reads "(no amendments)". We did not read Framingham's local ordinances, so this page cannot say whether the city adds any dryer duct rules of its own.

Under the 2021 International Residential Code, a dryer exhaust duct can run at most 35 feet, minus an allowance for each elbow (M1502.4.6.1), or the length the dryer maker's installation instructions allow (M1502.4.6.2); the hose behind the dryer must be one listed piece of 8 feet or less (M1502.4.3); and the duct must end outside with a backdraft damper and no screen (M1502.3), and domestic booster fans are not allowed (M1502.4.5). Permits for dryer vent work in Framingham

Framingham's Inspectional Services, at 150 Concord Street, Room 203 (508-532-5500), announced that permitting and licensing would move online to OpenGov starting July 1, 2025; the permits it lists there include building permits (with a residential short form), demolition and shed permits, and electrical, gas fitter, mechanical, plumbing and sheet metal trade permits. The inspectors can be reached on their direct lines during office hours of 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Monday through Friday and 4 to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The city's building permit fees page says work started without a required permit is double the building permit fee. Section R105.2.2 of the state residential code says ordinary repairs need no application or notice to the building official, but that a permit is required for work including rearrangement of parts of a structure affecting the egress requirements or mechanical systems, or other work affecting public health or general safety.

Inspections are generally conducted Monday to Friday, typically in the afternoon, and the address number must be on the structure itself, at least 3 inches high. The city's inspection requirements sheet for 1 and 2 family homes says you will fail if smoke alarms more than 10 years old or CO alarms more than 6 years old have not been replaced.

The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services, a state agency, advises cleaning the dryer's filter screen after each load to prevent lint buildup, which can cause fires, and cleaning the vents outside twice a year to clean out any accumulated dust and lint. The state agency also says an adult should be at home whenever the dryer is in use and the home should have working smoke alarms.
