Franklin dryer vent code rules
Franklin adopted the 2024 International Residential Code, with Appendices CD and BO, and the 2024 International Mechanical Code in Title 12 of its Municipal Code (Sections 12-1001 and 12-901). The City's Adopted Codes page gives January 1, 2026 as the effective date and says plans or revisions submitted before then are reviewed and inspected under the 2018 IBC.
The city's amendments to these codes (Sections 12-902 and 12-1002) contain no dryer exhaust changes: the residential code amendments cover items such as the list of work exempt from permit and the board of appeals, and the mechanical code amendments cover appeals, boiler permits, permit fees and vented decorative appliances. We did not check for Tennessee state amendments.
Under the 2024 International Residential Code, a dryer exhaust duct can run at most 35 feet, minus an allowance for each elbow (M1502.4.6.1), or the length the dryer maker's installation instructions allow (M1502.4.6.2); the hose behind the dryer must be one listed piece of 8 feet or less (M1502.4.3); and the duct must end outside with a backdraft damper and no screen (M1502.3), and domestic booster fans are not allowed (M1502.4.5). Permits for dryer vent work in Franklin
Franklin's Building and Neighborhood Services Department issues building permits and handles inspections (615-794-7012). To get an inspection, call the inspection request line at (615)591-5603 with the permit number and the type of inspection; the City says each discipline, such as plumbing, mechanical and electric, requires its own permit and number, and an inspection called in before 12 pm is scheduled for the next day. For HVAC units, the City's FAQ says even a change-out requires an electrical HVAC permit and a mechanical permit, pulled by the contractor, or by a homeowner doing the work with a Homeowners Affidavit.
