Los Angeles dryer vent code rules

The Los Angeles Residential Code adopts portions of the 2025 California Residential Code, and the Los Angeles Mechanical Code adopts portions of the 2025 California Mechanical Code; the Municipal Code shows the sections that adopt them readopted or amended by Ordinance No. 188,797, effective December 31, 2025. The California Building Standards Commission gives the 2025 California Building Standards Code an effective date of January 1, 2026.

For exhaust systems, section 95.500 of the Los Angeles Mechanical Code says Chapter 5 of the California Mechanical Code is adopted by reference. This page does not quote the California Residential Code's dryer section, which we could not read.

Permits for dryer vent work in Los Angeles

Section 95.111 of the Los Angeles Mechanical Code says no one may install, alter, repair, relocate, replace or add to installed heating, ventilating, air-conditioning or refrigeration equipment or other miscellaneous heat-producing appliances without a permit, except as the code provides. Its list of work that needs no permit includes any cooking range, broiler unit or domestic-type clothes dryer, and any repair of equipment not specified in the list when the total value of the repair is less than $500 for labor and material. That exemption names the clothes dryer appliance itself; the section does not mention dryer vents or ducts.

The Los Angeles Fire Department says that in 2008 the California State Fire Marshal determined that all apartment buildings in California with three or more units must be inspected every year by the local fire department. LAFD describes its routine annual inspection as having a primary goal of public education, with the inspector focusing on the building perimeter and common areas such as bonus rooms and laundry areas.
