San Diego dryer vent code rules
San Diego follows the 2025 California Building Standards Code, which the California Building Standards Commission gives an effective date of January 1, 2026; the city also lists its own amendments, effective April 22, 2026. The state's mechanical code in it is based on the 2024 Uniform Mechanical Code.
Unless the dryer maker's instructions allow otherwise and the building official approves, the 2025 California Mechanical Code (section 504.4.2.1) limits a dryer exhaust duct to a total length of 14 feet including two 90-degree elbows, with an exception for exhaust duct power ventilators, and section 504.4.2 requires rigid metal duct with a smooth interior. This page does not quote the California Residential Code's dryer section, which we could not read.

Cost and timing
HomeGuide's ranges at the top of this page are national; the cost guide breaks them down by floor, problem and company. Book before winter: the NFPA baseline is a cleaning once a year, and in US fire department records for 2020 to 2024, dryer fires nationally were most common in January (9.8%), February (9.3%) and March (10.1%). Warning signs are in signs of a clogged dryer vent.
