Plymouth dryer vent code rules
Minnesota Rules part 1309.0010 deletes chapters 12 to 24 of the 2018 International Residential Code, and any references to mechanical matters in it, and replaces them with Minnesota Rules chapter 1346, the Minnesota Mechanical Code, so dryer exhaust is not covered by the Minnesota Residential Code. Chapter 1346 incorporates chapters 2 to 15 of the 2018 International Mechanical Code, and the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry says the Minnesota Mechanical and Fuel Gas Code is effective April 6, 2020. Plymouth City Code Section 400.01 adopts the Minnesota State Building Code by reference, except for optional chapters not specifically adopted.
The revisor's table of parts for chapter 1346 lists part 1346.0504 as repealed, so Section 504 of the International Mechanical Code, which holds the clothes dryer exhaust rules, applies as the state adopted it. In the Minnesota Mechanical Code as published by the International Code Council, exhaust ducts shall be supported at 4-foot intervals and secured in place (Section 504.8.2); the maximum length of the exhaust duct is 35 feet from the connection to the transition duct from the dryer to the outlet terminal, reduced where fittings are used (Section 504.8.4.1), or the length the dryer manufacturer's installation instructions allow (Section 504.8.4.2); transition ducts must be a single listed and labeled length of no more than 8 feet and must not be concealed within construction (Section 504.8.3); and dryer exhaust ducts must terminate outside the building with a backdraft damper and no screen (Section 504.4). In a request for comments published in the State Register on Feb. 2, 2026, the Department of Labor and Industry said it is considering amendments to incorporate the 2024 International Mechanical Code; when we read its docket in September 2026, the effective date was listed as to be determined.
Permits for dryer vent work in Plymouth
