Omaha dryer vent code rules

Omaha Municipal Code Section 43-121 adopts the International Residential Code, 2018 edition, Chapters 2-23 inclusive, together with Chapter 43 of the Omaha Municipal Code, for detached one- and two-family dwellings and townhouses not more than three stories above grade with a separate means of egress; Chapters 1 and 24-42 of that code are not adopted. The code text we read gives no effective date, and the city's own planning pages could not be read when we checked in September 2026, so this page does not state one.

Section 43-127 rewrites the residential code's dryer duct termination section (M1502.3): exhaust ducts must terminate on the outside of the building, terminations must follow the dryer manufacturer's installation instructions and have a backdraft damper, and screens must not be installed at the termination. Omaha's version leaves out the base 2018 code's sentence that, if the manufacturer's instructions do not specify a termination location, the duct must terminate not less than 3 feet in any direction from openings into buildings. The city also adopts the 2024 International Mechanical Code, chapters 2-15 (Section 40-591), and its amendments to that code in Section 40-592 do not change the code's clothes dryer exhaust section (Section 504). This page does not quote the 2018 International Residential Code's dryer duct length limits.

Permits for dryer vent work in Omaha

The City of Omaha's own permit pages could not be read when we checked in September 2026, so this section relies on the municipal code. Section 40-106 says the installation, alteration, repair or replacement of any air conditioning/air distribution system or equipment or exhaust system or equipment shall not be undertaken in the city without a permit issued by the permits and inspections division, and that, except as allowed by Section 40-107, only the holder of a master ACAD contractor license or a master ACAD (residential) contractor license may apply for a permit for ACAD work. Section 40-111 says no permit is required under that article for minor repairs such as cleaning, adjusting and replacement of minor parts, or for repairs that do not include changing ductwork, plenums or adding registers, grilles or diffusers. Under Section 40-107, a homeowner doing air conditioning/air distribution work in a single-family dwelling he or she owns and lives in must notify the permits and inspections division and pay an inspection fee equal to the permit fees, and the work must be inspected and approved. None of these sections mentions dryer vents by name.

Omaha Municipal Code Section 48-204 makes it unlawful to offer for lease, lease or continue to lease a rental dwelling unless the rental property containing it has been registered with the permits and inspections division, and Section 48-205 says there shall be no fee for filing a registration application. Under Section 48-206, rental properties with code violations not remedied within the time allowed in a notice of violation, and properties not registered in a timely manner, go on the city's annual inspection list; any other rental property goes on a ten-year inspection list and is subject to periodic inspection once every ten years. The code requires at least 14 days' advance written notice of the date and time of an inspection to the property owner and tenant.

Omaha has adopted the 2024 edition of the International Fire Code (Section 46-1), and its 2024 International Mechanical Code is in effect within the limits of the city and its three-mile jurisdictional limit (Section 40-591).
