Reno dryer vent code rules

Reno Municipal Code Section 14.04.100 adopts the 2024 International Residential Code along with Exhibit A, the 2024 Northern Nevada Amendments published by the Northern Nevada Chapter of the International Code Council (February 20, 2025). The city's building permits page says the 2024 building codes were adopted by the City of Reno on July 1, 2025. The same page says that effective January 1, 2026, plans will only be accepted under the 2024 edition of the building codes.

The Northern Nevada Amendments change one section of the residential code's exhaust systems chapter, M1503.6 (makeup air), and do not amend the clothes dryer exhaust section (M1502). The amendments also rewrite the length limit in the Uniform Mechanical Code (section 504.4.2.1), which Reno adopts as well (Section 14.04.115): unless otherwise permitted or required by the dryer manufacturer's instructions and approved by the authority having jurisdiction, domestic dryer exhaust ducts under that code shall not exceed 14 feet, including two 90 degree elbows, with listed exceptions. The pages we read do not say which Reno buildings follow the Uniform Mechanical Code rather than the residential code, so this page does not apply that limit to houses. Under the 2024 International Residential Code, a dryer exhaust duct can run at most 35 feet, minus an allowance for each elbow (M1502.4.6.1), or the length the dryer maker's installation instructions allow (M1502.4.6.2); the hose behind the dryer must be one listed piece of 8 feet or less (M1502.4.3); and the duct must end outside with a backdraft damper and no screen (M1502.3), and domestic booster fans are not allowed (M1502.4.5). Permits for dryer vent work in Reno

Reno Development Services handles building permits (775-334-2063, [email protected]), and applications are submitted electronically on the ONE Regional Licensing and Permitting portal. The city's Building Permit Types sheet, updated June 1, 2026, lists EZ Permits for one- and two-family dwellings that include HVAC (Replacement Only), Water Heater or Boiler, Gas Fireplace (Insert Only) and Gas Line (Private Property Only), and for apartments and condos an HVAC EZ Permit for replacement only, one permit per unit; the sheet does not list dryer vents. The 2024 International Residential Code's list of mechanical work exempt from permit (R105.2) includes replacement of any minor part that does not alter approval of equipment or make such equipment unsafe, and the Northern Nevada Amendments we read list no change to that section.
