Colorado Springs dryer vent code rules

Colorado Springs is served by the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department, and its code, the 2023 Pikes Peak Regional Building Code, adopts the 2021 International Residential Code by reference, with local changes. The Colorado Springs City Council passed it as Ordinance 23-16 on March 28, 2023; the department lists April 10, 2023 as the effective date and June 30, 2023 as the implementation date, and says the code's 2nd Printing is the current code effective June 30, 2026.

Two of the regional code's local changes touch dryer vents. It adds an exception to the dryer duct installation section (M1502.4.2) for exhaust ducts installed in accordance with Section 504.9.2 of the 2021 International Mechanical Code, and it adds an exception to the exterior walls section (R302.1) saying vent terminations, including dryer vents, may be unprotected. This page does not describe what Section 504.9.2 allows, which we have not read.

Under the 2021 International Residential Code, a dryer exhaust duct can run at most 35 feet, minus an allowance for each elbow (M1502.4.6.1), or the length the dryer maker's installation instructions allow (M1502.4.6.2); the hose behind the dryer must be one listed piece of 8 feet or less (M1502.4.3); and the duct must end outside with a backdraft damper and no screen (M1502.3), and domestic booster fans are not allowed (M1502.4.5). Permits for dryer vent work in Colorado Springs

Permits go through the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department (719-327-2880). Its homeowner permit page lists furnace, air conditioning system, water heater and fireplace or stove work among projects that require a permit, and does not mention dryer vents; if you are in doubt, the department asks you to contact it before starting any project to verify the need for a permit.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department's Division of the Fire Marshal publishes a dryer fire safety sheet, updated March 2025, that calls failure to clean the number one reason a clothes dryer catches fire. It advises cleaning lint out of the vent pipe once a year, or more often if clothes take longer than usual to dry, or having a dryer lint removal service do it for you. Because of the city's changing weather, the sheet also says to check the outdoor vent flap often to make sure it is clear of snow, leaves or other debris. It also says to have your dryer installed and serviced by a licensed professional.

The department's smoke alarm sheet, updated February 2026, says it follows the 2021 International Fire Code with city amendments that require working smoke alarms on every level of a home and inside or outside sleeping areas.
