With 18% of homes built since 2010, newer layouts matter here: the USFA notes that builders often put laundry in upstairs bedrooms, hallways, bathrooms, kitchens and closets, which can mean a longer duct to reach an outside wall.

In Florida, clothes dryers were the equipment involved in 4.1% of residential structure fires where the equipment was identified, in fire department records for 2020 to 2024, below the national 4.6%. Tampa dryer vent code rules

Tampa follows the statewide Florida Building Code, Residential, 8th Edition (2023), in effect since December 31, 2023.

Florida's residential code keeps the dryer rules in section M1502, including the ban on booster fans (M1502.4.8).

Under the Florida Building Code, Residential, a dryer exhaust duct can run at most 35 feet, minus an allowance for each elbow (M1502.4.5.1); the hose behind the dryer must be one listed piece of 8 feet or less (M1502.4.3); and the duct must end outside with a backdraft damper and no screen (M1502.3), and domestic booster fans are not allowed (M1502.4.8). Check a run with the dryer vent length calculator.

Permits for dryer vent work in Tampa

A cleaning is maintenance; a new vent or a reroute is construction. In Tampa, residential electrical, plumbing and mechanical permits are handled by the city's Construction Services Division (813-274-3100, option 1).

Renting or in a condo in Tampa

Most Tampa households own their home; 49.7% rent, and 34.1% of homes are in buildings with five or more units. A duct inside walls or up to the roof generally falls to the owner or the condo association, so check your lease or association documents before booking; see apartment, condo and commercial dryer vent cleaning.

Cost and timing

HomeGuide's ranges at the top of this page are national; the cost guide breaks them down by floor, problem and company. Book before winter: the NFPA baseline is a cleaning once a year, and in fire department records for 2020 to 2024, dryer fires were most common in January (9.8%), February (9.3%) and March (10.1%). Warning signs are in signs of a clogged dryer vent.
